Bottle Bank and surrounding area
Bottle Bank was the heart of old Gateshead, the steep hill leading from the High Street to the old Tyne Bridge. In the early 19th century a new road (later named Church Street) was built with a slightly gentler slope, then with the building of the High Level Bridge, Wellington Street with its rail and bus stations became the gateway into the town for many people. Much of Bottle Bank was demolished to make way for the new Tyne Bridge in the 1920s, and over the years most of what remained has followed. The last remaining buildings became a pile of rubble towards the end of 2001, making way for the building of a new Hilton Hotel.
